Forever Migth Turn Out To Be a Short While

Long Weekends means small mini vacations, bring it on please

(Canon EOS 5D MKII, 50 mm. f/1.4 lens. 1/60 sec. @ f/22, ISO 100)

This Weekend I boarded the ferry, and left this Castle and my worries behind, to visit another famous Castle located in Sweden.

The planed destination have been on my "to visit short list" for a very very long time. So i packed my sleeping back, the fridge/freezer and my camera and took the G-Wagon for a ride.

(Canon EOS 5D MKII, 50 mm. f/1.4 lens. 1/60 sec. @ f/3.5, ISO 100)

Stopped over on my way at a destination dear to me on the way towards Kalmar, only few thing had changed in this lovely spot in the woodland near Skedebäckshult in the region called Glasriget. The most obvious very my new ride, - this is indeed a new era.

(Canon EOS 5D MKII, 17-40 mm. f/4.0L IS lens. 1/60 sec. @ f/9, ISO 100)

So after this trip down memory lane, with some warm memories of the fun time I shared with the kids here. Emil and I spent numerous weekends alone tying flies and fly-fishing in the local pond, and I also especially remember the cold winter skiing trips with both Emil and Sol on the small local hill near the summerhouse, witch where great fun and bonded us closer.

I then presses on in the fading light and finally arrived at my destination just before a beautiful sunset... More to come very soon.

Cars Move Me - Early Porsche 911´s

I´m in a process of getting more and more fond of the classic Porsche 911, the pre-1974 versions that is

1973 Porsche 911 RS

I´m known to have a fast pace on car renewals, and I´m getting far behind here. Apart from the BMW K1300S motorcycle bought 3 years ago, and the G-Wagon I imported from Germany earlier this year, noting much have happened, and it´s quite unusual for my to have a car for 8 (eight) straight years.

So if anybody want´s to buy a well maintained second-hand MY 2004 VW Touareg R5 with lots of factory options for a fair amount, I think I will let it go and try to find a nice pre 1974 911 as a summer ride.

Well at least I will be considering this thoroughly for a while, though being in the habit of following my impulses works great for me. Another option would be to get a newer air cooled 911 and strip it from the ugly impact bumpers introduced on 1974 models, and it would still have that very lovely no nonsense classic interior with the five round instruments, and as a plus some more power and go.

1972 Porsche 911 S

The RS and S versions of the 911 are the most desirable, with the prices on particular the RS´s sky rocketing. Other models are the T and E version, E for Ensprits (German for Injection) and T for Touring. The E and T cars can be found at reasonable prices, although classic Porsche´s are not cheap at all.

Innan Jag Kände Dig

Lyrics: Melissa Horn

Här blev jag den jag är
här kommer jag förbli
här har jag längtat bort
här har jag känt mig fri
här har jag blickat framåt
men ofta tittat ner

Caroll Shelby (1923 - 2012) R.I.P.

Sadly Shelby died on May 10, 2012 at the age of 89

Carroll Hall Shelby was an American automotive designer and racing driver. He had an major impact on automotive racing and design for over 50 years.

I think Shelby is most well known for making the AC Motors-based Shelby American Cobra, and later the Mustang-based performance cars for Ford Motor Company known as Mustang Cobras which he has done since 1965. His company, Shelby American Inc., founded in 1962, currently sells modified Ford vehicles, as well as performance parts.

To me, being some kind of petrol head I think, Shelby are the essence of American performance cars, and I´m sure that most grown boys at my age will have head of Shelby, also his cars have been featured in several films where cars play a major part.

May he rest in peace, the automotive world will certainly miss him.

Kom Med Mig

Lyrics: Mathilde Falch

The Classic BMW M1

The M1 where the first real supercar from BMW, developed purely for race, - another beautiful classic car I love

In the late 1970s, Italian manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation. The result was sold to the public, from 1978 to 1981, as the BMW M1.

The M1 was the only mid-engined BMW to be mass produced. It employed a twin-cam M88/1 3.5 L 6-cylinder petrol engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.
The M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 under the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. The body was designed by Giugiaro, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo show car.

Originally, BMW commissioned Lamborghini to work out the details of the car´s chassis, assemble prototypes and manufacture the vehicles, but Lamborghini´s financial position meant that BMW reassumed control over the project in April 1978, after seven prototypes were built. Only 456 production M1s were built, making it one of BMW´s rarest models. A well preserved car are priceless today, I only know of one car in Denmark, owned by BMW car dealer Jens Winther in Roskilde.

The Classic BMW 2002 turbo

I have had a sweet spot for BMW´s for about twenty years now, since I got my first one in 1992, a E34 12V 525i blue sedan witch replaced a long line of SAABs, a 99, a 900 and finally a 9000. The SAAB 99 where my second car bought when I was at age 20

The BMW 2002 turbo are one of the nicest Classic BMW´s, a small light and very capable performance cars at that times standards. The turbo-charged engine produced 170 BHP.

This particular car are restored very nicely, but I´m pretty sure the color are not correct for the time and model, but not matter it looks quite good actually. This engine is one of the last non electronic aided machines, from the pre-time of ECU managed engines.

Fishing Trips and Memories of Great Summer Holidays

The new catalog from Getaway-Tours just arrived, and I´m reminded that I don´t get to fly-fish as much as I want to

It has really been four years this summer, since I have been on a real fishing trip. That summer, just a year after my divorce, my son Emil and I went to the Trysil river in Norway for two weeks to fly-fish for Graylings.

The double spreed (shown above) in the catalog also reminded me about the summer my family and I went to Greenland to fish for trout. I was only age 15, with shoulder long hair; this summer holiday still are one of the most epic I can think of. It was a real adventure seeing and experiencing the wild nature, the Greenlandic people and the desolated fjord we made camp in was impressive above all other nature I had seen at that time, and maybe to this date.

My son and daughter talked about going on a fishing trip this summer, but unfortunately other plans have interfered with this.
But I´ll have to start fishing again soon, there´s just so much pleasure to it, and I must remember to live by: "This is your life, Do what you love, And do it often".

Easter Island
Ta Prahm Temple, Cambodia

This Is Your Life

I stumbled over these wise words yesterday:

This is your life, do what you love, and do it often.
If you don´t like something, change it.
If you don´t like your job, quit.
If you don´t have enough time, stop watching TV.
If you are looking for the love of your life, stop;
they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love.
Stop over analyzing, all emotions are beautiful.
When you eat, appreciate every last bite.
Life is simple; open your mind, arms, and heart to new things and people, we are united in our differences.
Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself.
Some opportunities only comes once; seize them.
Life is short; live your dream and wear your passion.
---

Especially the very first sentence, and number there form bottom up makes sense to me.

Thank You Adobe

My closest family and I went for a lunch-gathering some days ago in my old mother´s favorite spot in Copenhagen, from witch you can overlook the rooftops and several of the iconic spires of the Capital

My mother (age 82). (Canon EOS 5D MKII, 50 mm. f/1.4 prime, 1/60 sec. @ f/2.5, ISO 100)

Naturally I brought the 5D MKII with me and a 50 mm. f/1.4 prime lens. But I was not thinking photography when I picked a chair and sat down at the table in the Café; and as a result I got to sit facing the large windows and the bright light emerging from here, not an ideal position to make portrait photography. Naturally some exposure compensation helped out a bit. But anyway the people in the café made a nice backdrop, and together with the flower in the foreground gives a great depth of field in the frame.

But initial the frames was quite bad, very bad, but I managed to save a few of them with some serious help from Adobe Lightroom release 3.6 (64 bit). Especially the fill-light slider came in handy and were craked up to around 30. Normally this will result in some unpleasant noise in the darker areas, but luckily these shoots where taken at ISO 100 and handled the treatment quite well. I also made god use of the software neutral grey gradient filter, and applied three different ones in the top, and diagonal ones left and right in the frame, raging from -1.75 to 0 EV (Exposure Value).

Another great mistake in this photo was that I din´t get the focus exactly sharp on the right eye, it´s a bit off and lies just a few centimeter further back, - so remember to get your focus-points right.
Well, I seldom do portraits, so there´s still lots of stuff to learn in this area.
By the way I think this 50 mm. f/1.4 lens is the best value for money lens i have in my collection, it´s quite good, and the image are sharp and refined.

Mercedes-Benz GLK Sports Utility Vehicle

This GLK are actually a pretty nice car, and I would like the keys to one please

The GLK are MB´s answer to the growing demand on cars in the compact SUV segment, and are made to compete with the BMW X3, VOLVO XC60 and the AUDI Q5. I would take the GLK over these at any time. I´m found of the boxy design, as I´m found of the extremely boxy looks of my G-Wagon. The GLK are a true SUV, and not an off-road vehicle. There´s no diff-locks and no low ration gearbox, and the ground clearance and the fording capabilities are poor, being 145 mm. and 300 mm. respective. My G-Wagon has 280 mm. ground clearance and a 730 mm. fording depth.

But as a every-day car, and for a blast to Southern Europe for a skiing holiday, it would be quite nice.
It actually looks so nice that I´m considering swamping the Touareg for one of those, as insane as it would be, the thought are growing on me.

The Male Role of Today

This might seem a bit of topic; but i have been reading a interview in the paper today with the Danish businessman Asger Aamund

What caught my attention where a statement about the current weakened male ideal. The women are taking over and rules the home with a firm hand, and the young men and fathers follow along with no real argument.
He seems to be right in the picture that he paints of a young family today, the baby having two mommy´s, where the one might have a beard.

He also talks about the eighties where the government in the home where taken by women, and how they had their husbands running around at their command. And the sad part were that we, the men, let them; - and the very sad part is that they didn´t give a damn about us, though we followed along and tried to please them so hard. Sadly we never achieved anything by being so pleasing, and in the process of all this the men lost the respect of their wives.
Many of those men have never really fully recovered from that, states Asger, - and he might actually be right on that one also.

A marriage or relationship should be a mutual project, and both parties should be aware of the needs of the other half, not focusing entirely on their own needs. Indulging in a marriage you give up your independence and freedom, make sure that this is fully compensated by love, great sex, care and a lovely family; and make sure you tell the women what you want from life.

Celebrating 30 Years of The G-Wagon

Mercedes-Benz G Wagon Through The Ages

The G-Wagen was developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch and first offered for sale in 1979 and redesigned in 1990/1991. A new version was expected for 2007, but the new GL-Class will not replace the G-Wagen, and it will continue to be hand-built in Graz, Austria at an annual production of 4,000 to 6,000 units.

In February 2009, Magna Steyr, an operating unit of Magna International, announced that it signed an agreement with Daimler AG to extend the production of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria though 2016, and most likely until 2020. Besides the production, the further development of the G-Class by Mercedes-Benz is also located in Graz since 1992.
The G-Wagen is the longest produced Mercedes Benz in Daimler´s history, with a span of 32 years.

National Geography photo of the month in April 2012, Goðafoss Waterfall in Northern Iceland

A glacial torrent pours over a 40-foot-high ledge at Gođafoss, "waterfall of the gods." After the Icelandic assembly adopted Christianity in 1000, its leader threw his pagan idols into the falls. The mossy island, notes geographer Guđrún Gísladóttir, is protected from sheep.

CD Charger Gone, Replaced by Aux Battery

After some investigations on the web I discovered that it would be possible to find a optimum spot for my deep cycle auxiliary battery in the G-Wagon

The CD-charger removed, and some relays and wires rearranged

On the first overland trip in my G-Wagon into Morocco and The Western Sahara I had mounted the deep cycle auxiliary battery on some of the MDF-boards (Medium Density Fiberboard) fitted to hold stuff in place in the cargo space and make a foundation for the sleeping madrases. Now I have found a far better solution. I original discovered this solution as another G-Wagon owner did remove his CD-Charger to make room for a on-board air compressor.

As I don´t listen to CD´s anymore, the CD-charger witch holds a place in the rear left side of the cargo space, could be dismounted and the deep cycle battery, used to power the fridge/freezer and other stuff when the cars engine are not running, could be placed here instead. I had to reorganize a few relays and some wires to make room for the Optima YellowTop deep cycle battery, but it´s possible.
I´m not quite finished yet with the project, I´ll need to find a way to fix the battery properly, and also run some new wires from the main battery.

But this solution are far better than the first one, and the battery are out of the way when the MDF-boards are dismantled from the cargo area. More later...

The deep cycle auxiliary battery fits nicely (Optima YellopTop 55 Ah)

Wings Of Kilimanjaro

For over 20 years the Government of Tanzania has strictly enforced the ban on the use of Paragliders, Hang Gliders and Mountain Bikes in the Kilimanjaro National Park. In 2013, however, they will lift this restriction for a one time only event

In early 2013, a group of adventurers from every corner of the globe will come together for the 1st time ever to climb and fly from the “Roof of Africa” - Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain on the planet, and in doing so will raise over a million in charity.

Using Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, as the platform for the activity and the vehicle for our cause, it is Wings Of Kilimanjaro’s shared vision that we can utilise this rare opportunity to reinforce the universal need for humanity, compassion and generosity inherent in all of us.

Canon announces EOS 60Da for Astrophotography

After years without a dedicated successor to the 20a Canon introduces a new DSLR body for astrology photographers

From canonrumors.com:
"The Canon EOS 60Da camera packs a powerful 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C) that produces sharp and high-contrast images of astronomical objects, a major enhancement over the EOS 20Da model’s 8.2-megapixel sensor. The improved infrared-blocking filter is a modification suited specifically toward astronomy enthusiasts to achieve a hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity that is approximately three times higher than that of a normal Canon DSLR camera. This produces a 20-percent higher transmittance of Hydrogen Alpha line, or Hα wavelength, allowing astronomers to capture crisp, clear images of reddish, diffuse nebulae.

As a specialized product, the EOS 60Da is only available to order from select authorized dealers. The estimated retail price is $1,499.00 and it is expected to be available this month."

The Farewell to a late VW Westfalia Syncro Campervan

As I do regularly, I were browsing the expeditionportal.com the other night, and found this farewell letter to a VW Syncro Campervan

The short story write up by it´s present owner, whom had the Syncro for 12 years are heartbreaking, you will love to read it though.

As you all know, from a previous post here (Link: December 5, 2011), I´m quite found of the Westfalia Syncro Campervan, and the loos of this one breaks my heart.
It´s kind of awkward that we can become so attached to a simple piece of mechanics witch have no soul, but I understand this, It´s a bit like when you have been sharing many great experiences with friends or family in that "contraption" you have had for decades, it´s the memory of these adventures that makes the difference, if you know what I mean, - you might. It takes years and lost of involvement, but a car can actually be a close friend, or even fell like family.

I know, that when the day arrives, when I will have to sell my VW Touareg it will be a great loos to me, it´s the car that I have owned the longest time, and I had some really great times, adventures and vacations in it. It´s a dear friend to me now, and we are well into our ninth year together now.

Rock Art in The Western Sahara

During my overland though The Western Sahara i saw some amazing rock art, this engravings dates back several thousand years, but they are hard to date so no one really know exactly how old they in fact are

It´s also very strange to stand on the cliff, overlooking the landscape, - seeing nothing but a few trees, some stone and boulders, and the rest are sand.
Thousands of years ago The Sahara were a green landscape rich on plants, tree, water and wildlife. These engravings were made by hunters, hunting for wildlife to ease their hunger, it seems strange standing here at present time.

(All photos Canon EOS 5D MKII, 17-40 mm. f/4.0L lens)
